Maine health officials say mosquitoes in Lebanon have tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis virus.

The Maine CDC says the last known human case of EEE in Maine was in 2015. Officials said these are the first mosquitoes in the state to test positive since 2019, when a horse also tested positive.

The Maine CDC says no known human cases of any locally acquired mosquito-borne illness have occurred in the state so far this year.

EEE can cause severe symptoms including brain swelling and meningitis. In some cases the virus can be fatal.
