Lawmakers have shot down an attempt to repeal Maine’s ban on single-use plastic bags at many retail stores.

According to the Bangor Daily News, state senators voted 24-9 against the bill about one week after house members opposed it in an 80-64 vote.

The law took effect in July 2021.

Supporters of the proposal to repeal the law described reusable bags as unsanitary and bad for the environment due to the resources needed to produce them.

Those against the repeal effort say the law is reducing plastic bag litter.
