Fryeburg Police: Driver Charged After Nearly Striking Students In Crosswalk


A 72-year-old man was charged after police say he nearly struck two students in a crosswalk in Fryeburg.

Police charged William Layman of Augusta with driving to endanger, criminal mischief, and failing to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk.

His vehicle struck a crosswalk sign.

Police thanked the public for their help in identifying Layman as the driver of the vehicle.

Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin said a post about the incident on his department’s Facebook page reached more than 39,000 people.

CBS 13 reports Layman is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Bridgton District Court in December.
