The ongoing feud between Maine Governor Janet Mills and President Donald Trump doesn’t seem to be slowing down after the president asked for a “full throated apology” from Mills Saturday.
In a post to his social media platform Truth Social, Trump also requested a statement from Mills saying that she will “never make such an unlawful challenge to the Federal Government again.” Here’s Trumps full statement:
“While the State of Maine has apologized for their Governor’s strong, but totally incorrect, statement about men playing in women’s sports while at the White House Governor’s Conference, we have not heard from the Governor herself, and she is the one that matters in such cases. Therefore, we need a full-throated apology from the Governor herself, and a statement that she will never make such an unlawful challenge to the Federal Government again, before this case can be settled. I’m sure she will be able to do that quite easily. Thank you for your attention to this matter and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!! DJT”
The feud was ignited after an argument between the two at the White House last month over transgender athletes participating in high school sports, where Trump threatened Maine’s federal funding if Mills didn’t comply with his orders. Multiple government agencies such as the U.S Department of Education and U.S Department of Health and Human Services have since found Maine to be in violation of recently changed Title IX anti-discrimination laws.
The Portland Press Herald reports that as of early Saturday afternoon, Mills has not yet responded to Trump’s latest demand. She did previously state that her issue was about “whether a President can force compliance with his will, without regard for rule of law”.
“In America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, as much as this one tries to act like it — and it is the rule of law that prevents him from being so,” Mills said in a written statement.
