A legislative committee has given initial approval to providing Maine’s five low-barrier shelters with $7.5 million.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the shelters would receive the money over the next three years. The funding is included in the state supplemental budget proposal.

The executive director of Preble Street in Portland says MaineHousing would allocate roughly $500,000 for each shelter annually.

However, Penobscot Community Health Care said in a statement that the new funding wouldn’t entirely cover deficits that shelters are facing.

The Maine House and Senate are set to vote on the budget proposal in the coming days.
