The Maine Warden Service has recovered the bodies of two people who drowned on Messalonskee Lake Monday afternoon.

Game wardens say the bodies of 21-year-old Brandon Breton of Vassalboro and 19-year-old Joseph Mayo of Rome were located Tuesday morning.

Officials said the two were swimming off a pontoon boat with two other male friends in the southern end of the lake near Greely Island.

A strong gust of wind pushed the boat away from the swimmers. The two friends swam back to the boat but said Breton and Mayo “went under and never resurfaced.”

Divers searched the lake and officials used sonar technology to recover the bodies of the two men.

“While the air temperatures may seem like summer, water temperatures are still cold, and they can impact your ability to swim,” said Game Warden Lieutenant Dan Menard. “Boaters should wear their life jackets and swimmers should know their ability, and swim in areas appropriate for their experience.”
