Game wardens rescued two hikers who needed medical attention on Black Mountain just before thunderstorms rolled through the area on Tuesday.

The Maine Warden Service says the two female hikers called 911 for help and medical assistance around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Two game wardens hiked up the mountain and called for more assistance, but realized they had to hike back down quickly when thunderstorms began to approach. The wardens alternated carrying one of the women, who was losing consciousness, down the mountain on their backs in the rain.

The woman was then taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth around 7:30 p.m.

No word on the woman’s condition.
