PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A former state lawmaker at the center of two ballot referendums where signatures were challenged is running for Maine Senate in York County.

Republican Stavros Mendros, who served in the Legislature representing Lewiston, tells the Portland Press Herald that he has moved to Hollis.

He’ll be running against Democratic Sen. Justin Chenette, who criticized Mendros as having “a long history as a shady political operative.” Mendros’ actions led to fines for violating campaign finance laws and his ouster as Androscoggin County GOP chairman.

Mendros accused Chenette of “disgusting personal attacks.”

In 2012, Chenette made history at age 21 becoming the youngest legislator in Maine. He was also the youngest openly gay legislator in the United States.
