Governor Janet Mills announced Friday that Maine will accelerate it’s vaccination efforts to align with a new directive from President Biden to make all adults eligible for a coronavirus vaccine by May 1st.
In a statement, Governor Mills said the state’s plan has been changed to allow Mainers 50 and older to become eligible on April 1st, then allow all adults to be eligible on the first of May.
“From the day we received our first shipment of vaccines, we have been determined to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, focusing our limited supply first on those who are most at risk of dying from COVID-19. With the Biden Administration promising to increase the supply of vaccine in the next few months, we will do what we had always hoped we could: accelerate our vaccine timeline,” said Governor Mills.
Also on Friday, the state opened up vaccination clinics for Maine teachers and school staff who are 60 and older. More than 13 percent of Mainers are now fully vaccinated. 27 percent of Mainers age 60 or older are fully vaccinated.
