Gov. Mills Directs Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff to Honor Fallen Firefighter

AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN)  Gov. Janet Mills has directed United States and State of Maine flags be flown at half-staff statewide Monday from sunrise to sunset as funeral services will be held for firefighter Capt. Joel Barnes of Berwick who lost his life in the line of service Friday.

 

According to our info partners at CBS 13 News, details on services for Barnes, who died fighting a fire at a three-story apartment building on Bell Street, have not been announced.

“Capt. Joel Barnes laid down his life to save a fellow firefighter as together, they fought to protect Maine families. Joel will be forever remembered as a hero for his bravery and service to our state,” Gov. Mills said. “My thoughts and prayers are with Joel’s family, friends, fellow firefighters and the people of Berwick. I ask every family in Maine to join with me in honoring Joel’s service and wishing for the swift recovery of the four firefighters” injured in the fire.

The family of Captain Joel Barnes requests that any donations being made in his name go to the Berwick Volunteer Firefighters Association in his memory c/o Kennebunk Saving Bank, 2 School St., Berwick, ME 03901.
