Gov. Janet Mills is responding for the first time since President Trump’s social media post demanding an apology from her.

The back-and-forth started last month when Gov. Janet Mills challenged the president’s executive order that bans transgender athletes from girls’ sports.

Following Trump’s post demanding an apology, Gov. Mills criticized the president’s policies on healthcare, the economy and education, while speaking to reporters on Monday, saying in part “If the current occupant of the White House wants to protect women and girls, he should start by protecting the women and teenage girls who are suffering miscarriages and dying because they can’t get basic, life-saving health care in states across this country.”

President Trump has given state officials until later this week to sign an agreement requiring Maine to change its transgender athlete policy.
