Gov. Janet Mills says voters should have the final say on whether or not to remove Oxford County Sheriff Christopher Wainwright.

The governor’s decision Monday came after requests from county commissioners to have Sheriff Wainwright removed amid multiple incidents of misconduct.

A misconduct hearing was held last month. Wainwright admitted to selling guns from the department’s evidence locker without keeping records of those transactions. He said the money went back to the county to pay for gear for deputies.

Two uncertified officers also served as school resource officers under Wainwright’s tenure, though Wainwright says they were hired before he became sheriff.

In a statement Monday, Gov. Mills said the findings don’t support the sheriff’s removal, but she said her decision “should not be viewed as vindication of Sheriff Wainwright.”
