AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Maine Gov. Paul LePage is speaking out about the brutal abuse of a 10-year-old girl, calling out police, school officials, child welfare workers and even lawmakers who “dropped the ball.”

The Republican governor told WCSH-TV that the failure of anyone to intervene to stop the death of Marissa Kennedy was a “comedy of errors” and that “everybody messed this up.”

LePage said he was getting a full briefing Wednesday afternoon.

Julio and Sharon Carrillo, of Stockton Springs, are charged with murder in the girl’s death. The couple has been ordered held on $500,000 cash bail.

The mother and stepfather told police that the beat the girl daily before her death, once breaking a metal broom handle on the girl’s ribs.
