Grandfather, grandson struck and killed by vehicle while standing in yard in Sanford

Police are investigating after a 65-year-old man and his 15-year-old grandson were struck and killed by a vehicle in Sanford Wednesday.

The two were struck by an SUV while they were standing in a yard outside a home.

It happened around 4 p.m. when the vehicle veered off Old Falls Road.

The SUV went into the yard and struck Michael Gilbar of Jericho, Vermont and his teenage grandson.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gilbar was taken to Sanford Regional Airport by ambulance but died before being transported to the hospital by LifeFlight.

The driver was taken to Southern Maine Healthcare with non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges against the driver were immediately announced by police.
