HARTFORD, Maine (WGAN) Maine State Police have charged a man with murder in connection to the death of his long-time girlfriend and mother of two in Hartford.

State Police spokesman Steve McCausland says 46-year-old Rondon Athayde was charged with murder Thursday evening around 6 P.M. and taken to Oxford County Jail. He’s charged in the death of 41-year-old Ana Cordeiro.

Athayde called 9-1-1 around midnight Wednesday night, telling dispatchers he had found Cordeiro unresponsive in their home. First responders were unable to revive her. Investigators say Athayde cooperated with them as they gathered details throughout the day on Thursday.

McCausland says the couple moved to Maine from Miami about two years ago and are originally from Brazil. Cordeiro worked at Lowe’s in Auburn. Her two children were placed in protective custody.

An autopsy showed that the death was a homicide. Athayde will appear in court Friday.
