MILLINOCKET, Maine (AP) A 74-year-old hiker who got lost in low visibility on Mount Katahdin, suffered a 50-foot fall and spent a cold night waiting for help has died from his injuries.

Officials say Donald MacGillis, a former editor for The Berkshire Eagle and Boston Globe, was in critical condition when airlifted from Maine’s tallest mountain Wednesday.

His son confirmed MacGillis died hours later at a hospital in Bangor.

MacGillis, from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was hiking with a nephew when they got lost in rain and fog on the Knife Edge trail on Wednesday.
