WESTBROOK, Maine (AP) A Maine lawmaker is denying allegations made by a local monthly magazine that he had romantic relationships with students while he was a teacher and coach at an all-girls high school.
A lawyer for Westbrook Democratic Rep. Dillon Bates said Friday there’s “not a shred” of evidence to support the suggestion that Bates engaged in misconduct. Walter McKee called the allegations “baseless.”
“The Bollard” magazine in Portland quoted one unnamed woman in the story.
Democratic House Speaker Sara Gideon called on Bates to resign.
Bates hasn’t been charged with any crime. McKee said Bates will serve out the rest of his term. A woman identifying herself as Bates’ girlfriend said the story isn’t true.
