Maine State Police say human remains were discovered at a landfill in Lewiston.

Police say they received a call from someone who discovered the remains Tuesday morning at the solid waste facility on River Road.

The remains were collected by officials with the chief medical examiner’s office, which is expected to conduct an autopsy in the coming days.

Investigators were expected to remain at the facility for most of the day on Tuesday and continue interviewing witnesses and other persons of interest.

State police don’t believe there’s any threat to the public.

We’ll have more information on this as it becomes available.
