AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) The Coast Guard is urging fishermen to remove their ice shacks to make way for ice breaking this week on the frozen Kennebec River.
Four Coast Guard vessels are going to begin breaking ice on Wednesday.
The largest is a 140-foot, ice-breaking tug based out of Bayonne, New Jersey. Three smaller ice-breaking tugs from Maine are also part of the effort.
Coast Guard officials say that early cold weather created a lot of ice that has remained despite warmer temperatures since then.
Once the Kennebec River is broken out, the Coast Guard will shift operations to the Penobscot River and break ice up to Bangor.
