Speed, distraction played role in Maine crash that killed 2

SABATTUS, Maine (AP) Police in Maine say speed and driver distraction played a role in a crash in which two Lewiston residents were killed and three other people injured.

Investigators say the crash happened on Monday morning when an SUV driven by 60-year-old Wabah Sahal Salat left the road and hit a parked beverage truck in Sabattus. They say the crash killed Salat and 48-year-old passenger Shariffa Shale Ali.

The crash also injured two passengers, 38-year-old Sareya Abdi and 48-year-old Mwavita Echa Kiza. Thirty three-year-old Shane Cormier, the beverage truck driver, was also hurt.

The Sun Journal reports the four people in the SUV, members of Lewiston’s Somali community, were headed to work at Common Wealth Poultry in Gardiner. Plant managers decided to close for the day. The Somali community’s grieving the crash.
