Investigation into baby’s death leads to drug charges for Oakland mother

OAKLAND, Maine (WGAN) Detectives seized $700,000 worth of drugs from the home of an Oakland woman following the death of her baby.

Shannon Moss with the Maine Department of Public Safety says 21-year-old Ashley Malloy called 911 last Tuesday to report her 14-month-old child, Karson Malloy, was having a medical emergency. The child was rushed to the hospital in Waterville where he was pronounced dead.

As part of a preliminary investigation, detectives executed a search warrant at Malloy’s Oak Street apartment and found 5.85 pounds of fentanyl, 3.4 pounds of methamphetamine, 1.35 pounds of crack cocaine, and $2,262 in cash and other items associated with drug trafficking.

Malloy was arrested Thursday on trafficking charges and released on unsecured bond.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is still working to determine the child’s cause of death.
