Investigators say object that damaged vehicle parked in Portland parking lot came from tugboat

A 35-pound metal object that damaged a vehicle parked in the Casco Bay Lines parking lot in Portland was determined to be from a tugboat.

That’s according to Casco Bay Lines and the FAA, which conducted an investigation after a pipe struck the vehicle Wednesday night, shattering the window and denting the frame.

Casco Bay Lines says there was too much tension on a cleat that was tied to a tugboat during low tide, causing the cleat to break off the boat, launch over the Maine State Pier building and hit the car.

The FAA was contacted when it was previously suspected that the object may have fallen from an airplane.
