Police say an inmate who escaped from the Androscoggin County Jail on Monday morning stole a vehicle and led officers on a chase.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old David Ricardo Mockler of Lisbon climbed a fence during recreation, squeezed through two rows of barbed wire, then jumped 25 feet off a roof before stealing an unlocked vehicle parked nearby.

Police say the vehicle was later involved in a crash in Auburn. A low-speed chase ensued before he crashed again in Mechanic Falls and was taken into custody.

Mockler was taken to the hospital with a possible broken ankle. He was charged with escape, theft, and failing to stop.

He was incarcerated since May 15 on drug charges, criminal mischief, theft by unauthorized taking, and violating conditions of release.
