PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) A message in a bottle that is more than 36 years old was discovered in Massachusetts.

Joshua Mendes says he found a weathered glass bottle with the bleached letter while beachcombing in Provincetown.

He says the letter was signed by an 11-year-old girl named Jenny Brown and dated May 14, 1983.

The letter gives the address of a post office box in Jonesport, Maine, and says “Please write me.”

The Bangor Daily News reports that Brown still lives in Jonesport. She says her mother had that PO box for more than 30 years.

“It’s been a long time to have something you threw in the water wash up,” Jenny Brown’s sister, Kathy Brown, told the paper. “It took her by surprise.”
