BELFAST, Maine (AP)   A judge has ordered separate trials for a husband and wife in the death of a 10-year-old girl.

The order came after Sharon Carrillo argued that both she and her daughter were abused by her husband, Julio Carrillo. But the Portland Press Herald reports that the judge declined to suppress statements in which Sharon Carrillo acknowledged taking part in the abuse.

Both Carrillos are charged with murder in the death of Marissa Kennedy in Stockton Springs. The crime shocked the state and led to a push for child welfare reform.

Both confessed in police interviews to beating the girl daily and trying to make her death look like an accident. Since then, Sharon Carrillo’s attorney has questioned her intellectual capabilities and suggested her husband and police coerced her into confessing.
