BIDDEFORD, Maine (Portland Press Herald) A federal judge has ruled that a Maine police department isn’t liable for a 2012 shooting that killed two teenagers.

The Portland Press Herald reports the victims’ mothers sued, alleging Biddeford and its police department should be held accountable for failing to arrest or detain the shooter before the slayings despite being called about a reported threat by him.

The now-convicted man, 81-year-old James Pak, is serving a life sentence for the murders of Derrick Thompson and Alivia Welch.

U.S. District Judge Jon Levy granted Biddeford’s request for summary judgment and found that the defendants are not civilly liable for Pak’s crimes.
