Laurel Libby has announced she is considering a run for governor in 2026. On Tuesday, the Republican state senator made the announcement at a Cumberland County Republican Committe event in Topsham.
Rep. Libby told WGAN she “certainly did” do well in polls. “I think we’re starting with a really strong base if we do declare, and I’m confident that Mainers will rally around if and when I do,” said Libby. She cited her children and future generations of Mainers as her main motivations for considering the race.
Amid speculation about her political future, Libby was included in the early polls. The state representative was polled as the highest ranking potential Republican candidate back in January. According to The Maine Wire, 27% of Republican respondents were likely to support Libby while 55% would consider supporting Libby.
In the Democratic field, The Maine Wire showed an early lead for Angus King III with 33% of respondents saying they were likely to support King and 47% saying they would consider supporting King.
The gubernatorial race, however, is far from over. Currently, 15 candidates have joined the field:
Republicans listed by the Maine Ethics Commission include Maria Aguilo, Kenneth Capron, Robert Charles, David Jones, James Libby, Owen McCarthy, Steven Sheppard, and Robert Wessels. The current Democrats listed by the Maine Ethics Commission are Shenna Bellows, Troy Jackson, Angus King III, Kenneth Pinet, and Hannah Pingree. The two Independents listed by the Maine Ethics Commission are Richard Bennett and Alexander Murchison.
Current Governor Janet Mills is term limited. With no incumbent seeking reelection, the 2026 gubernatorial race will likely show contested races in the primaries.
