PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A Maine lawmaker has filed a complaint about a top award the state police gave to a trooper who is accused of racially profiling a man in a traffic stop.

Charges against the man were eventually dismissed because a recording captured Trooper John Darcy calling him a thug before pulling him over.

The Portland Press Herald reports Rep. Jeffrey Evangelos asked the public safety commissioner on Wednesday why Darcy was given the Trooper of the Year award following the allegations. In the award announcement, state police said Darcy had developed a training on gangs given to new recruits.

Judges overseeing other cases involving the trooper are also reconsidering motions to suppress evidence he collected.
