A state lawmaker is looking to add cursive back into the curriculum at Maine’s schools.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Republican Rep. Joseph Underwood of Presque Isle is sponsoring a bill that would require all elementary students to receive cursive instruction from third to fifth grade.

A growing number of states are teaching children cursive, with 24 states now requiring cursive instruction compared to only 14 a decade ago.

That bill was expected to go before the legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee Thursday morning.
