A public hearing was held Monday on a bill that would remove Maine from the National Popular Vote compact.

Last year, Maine joined 16 other states and the District of Columbia when it adopted a law that would award all of the state’s Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote.

Maine will give all four of its electoral votes to the popular vote winner only if enough states sign on to the compact to equal 270 electoral votes.

Supporters of the compact have pointed to presidential elections where the winner did not clinch the popular vote, while those against it say it would take away the voting power of Mainers.
