A public hearing was held Monday afternoon for a bill that would expand Maine’s child tax credit.

Lawmakers say the proposal would provide an additional $300 per child under the age of six, with the goal of helping families cover essential needs like child care, food and rent.

According to CBS 13 news, Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry says the bill has bipartisan support.

Supporters say it will pay for itself by phasing out the tax credit for the state’s highest earners who don’t need it as much.
