BANGOR, Maine (AP) – A federal lawsuit alleges that a salesman for a Maine electricity supplier posed as an auditor for a utility company to trick people into signing up for more costly service.
The lawsuit says a salesman for retail electricity seller Electricity Maine pretended to work for Central Maine Power, a utility that delivers electricity. It says the salesman, Wyatt Struin, pretended to be correcting a customer’s bill in an attempt to sign them up for a contract that costs 30 percent more than the standard rate.
Struin denies impersonating a Central Maine employee, but tells the Bangor Daily News that he has heard of salesmen for other companies doing so. He says customer confusion is to blame for people mistaking him for a utility employee, not deceptive tactics.
