PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Legalized recreational marijuana is coming soon to Maine, but only a handful of cities and towns in the state have laid the groundwork for retail sales.

Maine’s marijuana rules allow municipalities to opt in or out of allowing sales of adult-use marijuana, which voters legalized in 2016.

The law allows pot to be sold in stores likely starting in 2020. But it’s possible that it’ll be for sale in only a few of the state’s nearly 500 cities, towns and plantations.

An exact number of how many communities will opt in is difficult to come by. Municipalities are in different stages of deciding whether to grant licenses.

Pot enthusiasts say they’re concerned about the possibility of vast parts of Maine becoming “marijuana deserts” where the drug’s legal but not available.
