LePage Claims Massachusetts Toll System Shaking Down Drivers

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Maine Gov. Paul LePage says Massachusetts authorities are using “shakedown” tactics to collect tolls.

The Portland Press Herald reports LePage sent a letter to Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker last month detailing claims about Massachusetts’s electronic toll system, EZDriveMA. Drivers who don’t have an E-Z Pass are mailed bills by the state.

LePage says one Maine driver who contacted his office said he was charged multiple late fees by EZDriveMA and told his license would be suspended when his payment wasn’t processed on time. The Republican says the Maine Turnpike Authority has received other similar complaints.

Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap says LePage’s letter focuses on an isolated incident and that toll issues are usually resolved.

Baker’s office declined to comment on the letter Monday.
