Former Republican Governor Paul LePage intends to run for the 2nd Congressional District seat held by Democrat Jared Golden.

LePage filed for the 2026 race late Sunday, and a formal announcement is expected Monday.

He served two terms as governor but was defeated by current Democratic Governor Janet Mills in an attempt to return to the office in 2022.

His consideration of a run for the conservative leaning 2nd District became public over the winter.

LePage is 76 years old. The Bangor Daily news reports he would be one of the oldest freshman congressmen in history. He became governor in 2010 and set a record for vetoes of bill passed by the state legislature while in office.

Golden is considering a run to replace the term-limited Mills for governor after winning reelection to his seat by less than 3,000 votes over Republican Austin Theriault in 2024.

The Daily News reports Republicans would be heavily favored to flip the congressional seat if Golden vacated it.
