Lewiston police say three people and a dog were killed in an accident Wednesday afternoon.

Police said multiple people reported the two-vehicle crash on Route 196 or Lisbon Street around 2:30 p.m.

Lisbon Street at Gayton Street was closed to traffic for much of the afternoon while emergency responders tended to the victims and investigated the accident. The fire department was called in and the vehicle occupants had to be extricated.

Two people died at the scene and a third died after being taken to the hospital.

Police are not releasing the names of those involved pending positive ID and notification of family.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say it appears speed was a contributing factor.
