The Office of Maine’s Attorney General says a Fryeburg police officer was justified when he shot and killed a man after a high-speed chase in January.

The chase began in New Hampshire and was picked up by Fryeburg police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office before the driver reportedly hit multiple vehicles and crashed into a snowbank.

The incident ended when Fryeburg Officer Micheal St. Laurent fatally shot and killed 52-year-old Kenneth Ellis of Massachusetts.

The Attorney General says Officer St. Laurent reasonably believed he was acting in defense of himself at the time he used deadly force.

No police dash camera or body-worn camera captured the confrontation.

A report says Officer St. Laurent was equipped with a camera but an unknown “installation error” caused it turn off when he shut off his cruiser’s siren.
