Maine’s Attorney General says the shooting of a man by two Portland police officers in December was justified.

Portland police responded to a report of an aggravated assault the night of December 17th, 2023. The suspect, 42-year-old Kyle Desmarais, fled in a vehicle and was stopped on the Exit 2 off-ramp in South Portland.

Police say Desmarais got out of his vehicle and fired 11 rounds at two police vehicles. Two officers returned fire, striking Desmarais, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Attorney General Aaron Frey says the officers acted out of self-defense.

The Portland Police Department is conducting its own internal review of the incident.
