Maine’s Attorney General says a state trooper was justified in fatally shooting a man armed with a BB gun in Hiram last summer.

39-year-old Steven Nelson of Hiram was shot and killed by Trooper Zachary Fancy, who was investigating a possible domestic violence incident in June.

Trooper Fancy pulled the trigger after he said Nelson pointed a firearm at him, which was later found to be a BB gun.

In his report, Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey said “Trooper Fancy acted in self-defense and defense of other when he shot at Mr. Nelson.”
