Maine’s Attorney General has filed a complaint under the Maine Civil Rights Act against a man accused of threatening an interracial couple and their children.

Attorney General Aaron Frey says the complaint was filed against 52-year-old Dale O’Brien of Jonesboro. O’Brien, who’s a neighbor of the victims, is accused of threatening the family and firing gunshots when they were walking along a private road in April. The family informed him they had explicit permission from the property owner to walk along the road.

About a month earlier, a hardware store clerk reported an interaction with O’Brien to police. The clerk said O’Brien used a racial epithet when he told them he believed he could get away with shooting his neighbor.

The complaint filed by the AG’s office seeks an order prohibiting O’Brien from having any contact with the man.
