Federal Auditors have accused Maine of misusing $2.6 million in federal grant money to pay off pension liabilities.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the U.S. Department of the Interior issued several audits to the state, one accusing Maine of using new grant money intended for fishing, hunting and wildlife protection programs to instead fund its pension and retiree health care system.
The audits were issued to Maine’s Department of Marine Resources and Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Recent audits allege another $750,000 of ‘financial irregularities’ between the two departments.
While using funds in projects that the money had not initially been intended for is a fairly common practice among state governments, the U.S. Department of the Interior claims Maine diverted an excessive amount of funds from fishing, hunting and wildlife protection programs.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to submit the first corrective action report against the Department of Marine Resources before August 15. A corrective action report for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife must be submitted before October 27, which will include the amount of money Maine would be expected to repay.
