AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine lawmakers are voting on a two-year budget deal with a sticker price slightly below the governor’s original $8 billion proposal, thanks to surplus tax revenues and minor savings.

The budget failed to get enough votes to pass in initial votes Friday. But the budget still faces more votes.

The budget needs two-thirds votes in both chambers to get to Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.

The Legislature’s appropriations committee voted 11-1-1 Wednesday on a $7.98 billion budget. The Legislature’s set to adjourn next week.

Mills says no one got everything they wanted, but says she welcomes bipartisan agreement.

Supporters say the deal boosts revenue sharing and property tax relief. But Republicans worry future revenues will be lower than projections.

Mills proposes putting $20 million into the rainy day fund.
