A slew of positive COVID-19 cases has temporarily shuttered the Alfred Fire and Rescue Department, according to a Facebook post by the town Saturday.

The towns of Sanford, Waterboro, Lyman, Goodwins Mills and Kennebunk will cover all EMS calls until the department is clear to return.

“Obviously our fire and rescue personnel took all the precautions that are possible, but considering all the close contact with other people it is not surprising this occurred. It’s the reason first responders get the first doses of the vaccine, but as you know the numbers have surged recently and this is a reflection of that surge,” town selectman said.

Town selectman reminded residents to continue to dial 911 in the event of emergency, and their calls would be answered and responded to by covering towns. It remains unclear on if response time will be impacted by this closure.
