There were 795 cases of coronavirus and two additional deaths in Friday’s update from the Maine Center for Disease Control.

329 people are hospitalized with the virus.

The 7-day average of new daily cases has reached 518, with health officials anticipating the state will continue to see larger caseloads because of the delta variant.

Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah said this week his agency is working alongside Jackson Laboratories to review genomic sequencing in anticipation of the recently-identified omicron variant arriving in the state.

Little is known about the variant, but Dr. Shah says the main focus right now is still delta. He says omicron is a concern, but so far it appears unlikely that the variant will present a worst-case scenario where vaccines offer no protection.

In an interview on Coast 93.1 Friday morning, he said it’s possible the variant could lead to more breakthrough cases. According to the Maine CDC, the state has recorded more than 14,000 such cases, but the agency says that’s likely an undercount.

71% of Mainers ages five and up are vaccinated.
