Maine consumer protection agency warns of uptick in scams

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Financial regulators in Maine are warning the public about an increase in the number of scam phone calls residents have been receiving in recent weeks.

Will Lund, superintendent of the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection, says residents have also reported scams that arrive via the internet and mail over the last 30 days. One such scam has involved unlicensed debt collectors contacting Maine residents in pursuit of debts that don’t exist.

The bureau has asked residents who suspect a scam to call 1-800-332-8529 or file complaints on the state website.
