Governor Janet Mills announced the retirement of Bruce Van Note as Commissioner of the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT), effective August 15, 2025.

Van Note has served in the role since 2019, guiding the department through transformative infrastructure projects and operational improvements.

According to a press release from the Office of Governor Mills, Van Note completed significant projects that benefited the state, such as the construction of the Masawaska-Edmonston International Bridge, opening I-395/Route 9, the creation of LAP and more.

With these projects, Van Note has gained a reputation as a practical and effective leader who made the most of available resources to improve public safety, infrastructure, and economic opportunity across Maine.

His focus on collaboration and problem-solving helped MaineDOT deliver meaningful results, even amid budget and workforce challenges.

“Bruce leaves a remarkable legacy as MaineDOT commissioner. I will miss his contributions to my administration and I wish him nothing but the best following his retirement,” states Governer Janet Mills.

In a statement, Van Note reflected on his role as commissioner saying, “Serving as MaineDOT commissioner has been the honor and privilege of my life. I want to thank Governor Mills for giving me the opportunity to serve the people of Maine, the state I love. With her support, and through the efforts of the MaineDOT team, our consultant and contractor partners, and lawmakers at the federal and state levels, we have made a real difference in safety, economic opportunity, and quality of life in Maine.”
