Maine health officials are reminding the public about the potential dangers of browntail moth caterpillars this fall.

The Maine DHHS says the hairs from browntail moth caterpillars can cause respiratory problems and skin rashes.

The moths have now been reported in all 16 Maine counties.

The hairs can get stirred up by outdoor yard work like raking and mowing.

The Maine DHHS says Mainers can avoid areas with high browntail activity, tightly secure your clothing when spending time outdoors, and aim for damp days or spray down vegetation before doing outdoor activities. The moisture can help prevent the hairs from becoming airborne.
