BANGOR, Maine (AP)   Data shows a sharp increase of embezzlement arrests in Maine, and experts say the number could be higher because the majority of cases aren’t reported to police.

The Bangor Daily News reports 67 people were arrested for embezzlement in 2016, a 46 percent increase from the previous year. Most of those charged worked for governments, banks or nonprofit organizations.

While the reasons for the increase are unclear, Bob Brown says better police investigation training, more prosecutions and increased employee training in how to spot fraud played a role. Brown is one of the founding partners of The CPA Solution, a company that specializes in fraud detection.

The Associated of Certified Fraud Examiners estimated that losses from embezzlement reached $6.3 billion globally last year.
