Maine governor’s veto of sports betting bill upheld in House vote

AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN) Governor Janet Mills’ veto of a sports betting bill has been upheld by the Maine House of Representatives.

In an 85-57 vote on Tuesday, legislators sided with the governor on her veto of the bill, which would make sports betting legal in Maine for residents 21 and older. According to our info partners at CBS 13 news, it would also have introduced a tax on online and mobile betting as well as betting facilities like casinos and off-track betting parlors.

Those opposed to the measure cited multiple reasons, including the impact of gambling addiction on Maine families.

The Maine State Police’s gambling unit says the change could have brought in nearly $7 million in state revenue, but Governor Mills argues that many other states that legalized sports betting did not see the kind of revenue they were expecting.
