The coronavirus surge fueled by the more contagious delta variant continues in Maine, with an additional 867 cases reported Wednesday.

There were no new deaths in Wednesday’s update.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says it’s been processing a backlog of positive tests in recent weeks, which suggests that a portion of the new cases being reported each day date back to previous days and weeks.

Wednesday’s update brings the state’s seven-day average of new cases to 559, down from 614 one week prior. That number was 450 two weeks ago.

The growth in coronavirus hospitalizations appears to have slowed in recent days, with 218 patients in Maine hospitals as of Tuesday. 67 of those people were in intensive care while 34 were on ventilators.
